98 Nigerians killed in S’Africa within four years – Federal Government

The Federal Government has spoken in loud and unambiguous terms to South Africa. It told South Africa’s International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Ronald Lamola, in Abuja yesterday that 98 Nigerians have been killed in the past four years and therefore must stop. Lamola was dispatched by President Cyril Ramaphosa as a special envoy to Abuja for fence-mending following the recurring attacks by South Africans on foreign nationals, including Nigerians. Over 1,500 Nigerians have been evacuated by the Federal Government from the former apartheid enclave. The special envoy delivered a message from Ramaphosa to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu before meeting with top officials led by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye. Enikanolaiye told Lamola and other South African officials that President Tinubu directed the meeting to address what he described as persistent “Afrophobic attacks” targeting Nigerians and other […]

Falana canvases suit against S’Africa at AU court

Senior Advocate Femi Falana has urged Nigeria, Ghana and other African countries whose nationals were killed or brutalised in xenophobic attacks to sue the South African Government before the African Union Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Arusha, Tanzania. Also, Director-General of the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS), Ilorin, Kwara State, Issa Aremu, urged South African leaders to uphold the enduring values of the late President Nelson Mandela by promoting tolerance, reconciliation and Pan-Africanism while taking decisive steps to end xenophobic attacks against immigrants. Falana, in a statement, said the African Union (AU) does not have the power to compel South Africa to pay compensation to victims of xenophobic attacks. He said: “The decision of the governments of Nigeria and Ghana to report South Africa to the African Union is completely diversionary and time-wasting. “Both countries […]

Xenophobia and the suspected South African drug trafficker arrest

What goes round comes round. That was a lesson South Africans did not appear willing to apply, but which has now rebounded on them to unavoidably confront and ultimately respond to. In the thick of the xenophobic violence that forced many Nigerian immigrants to flee the country recently, South Africa’s Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, profiled the harried migrants as illicit drug dealers and fomenters of crime whose exit from her native land was a welcome development. She served a cheeky challenge on Nigerian authorities to provide information on locations allegedly used by Nigerian immigrants for drug-related activities, to assist her country’s law enforcement operatives […]

Evacuated Nigerians Return Home Amid Hostilities Against Black Migrants in South Africa

A group of evacuated Nigerians has returned home following renewed hostilities targeting black migrants in parts of South Africa, prompting concerns over the safety and welfare of foreign nationals. The returnees arrived in Nigeria after coordinated evacuation efforts by the Federal Government and relevant agencies to assist citizens affected by the unrest. Authorities said the evacuation was carried out to ensure the safety of Nigerians who faced threats amid the escalating tensions. Reports indicate that the hostilities disrupted the lives and livelihoods of many migrants, forcing some to abandon their businesses, jobs, and residences. Several affected individuals sought assistance from Nigerian diplomatic missions before arrangements were made for their safe return. Government officials reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerian citizens abroad, stating that support would be provided to help the returnees reintegrate into society. The Federal Government […]
