A 43-year-old cleric, Jacob Irewa has allegedly set his wife, Berida Irawo, ablaze at Oworo Estate in Felele, Lokoja, Kogi State. The attack followed a domestic dispute after the victim burned some of her husband’s unused clothes without his permission. The incident happened at about 8:30 p.m., on Friday, August 14, 2026. Our correspondent in Kogi reported that a statement issued on Sunday in Lokoja by the spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, ASP Saliu Afusat, said Irewa has been arrested for alleged attempted culpable homicide. Saliu said the victim, Mrs Berida Irawo, sustained injuries and was receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele. Ahead of the Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State, the Nigeria Police Force says it has mopped up 34 illegal firearms. CSP Aniete Iniedu, the Force Public Relations Officer, made the disclosure during a town hall meeting held at the Osun State police command headquarters in Osogbo on Thursday. Babatunde Komolafe Festus, an All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Assembly candidate in Osun State, has reportedly been arrested by the Nigerian Navy personnel in his hometown, Ifewara, over alleged possession of a gun. Sources disclosed that Komolafe was arrested on Thursday, while travelling in a campaign vehicle belonging to the APC, alongside other supporters. The arrest comes barely 48 hours before the Osun State governorship election scheduled for Saturday, August 15. Persistent rainfall in Lagos yesterday disrupted commercial activities and slowed movement across the state as traders, commuters and motorists grappled with the effects of the prolonged downpour.
