The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is compelled to publicly address issues pertaining to its preventive moves in freezing the bank account of the Osun State government, without prejudice to the imminent governorship election in the state. The Commission has been busy investigating the Osun state government since March, 2026, regarding alleged fraudulent handling of Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds and Federal Account Allocation Committee, FAAC account to the tune of N11, 000,000, 000(Eleven Billion Naira only). To this end, some officials of the state government, especially the Accountant General of the State, have had interview sessions with investigators of the EFCC. These ongoing investigations of the state government would not have warranted any placement of Post No Debit order on its account but for the precipitate and unwarranted movement of funds from the accounts to different suspicious accounts since […]

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has said the Federal Government believes that many of Nigeria's pressing challenges can only be addressed through sustained partnership with faith communities, traditional institutions, civil society organisations, the private sector and citizens, stressing that constructive engagement is essential to promoting peace, social cohesion and national development. Akume said the administration of President Bola Tinubu would continue to deepen consultations with the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), other faith-based organisations and relevant stakeholders on issues affecting the country, maintaining that government remains open to honest counsel and would continue to govern with openness, accountability and evidence-based policies. He also assured that the Tinubu administration is neither seeking, nor in support of a one-party state, just as it remains deeply respectful of the independence of the Independent National Electoral […]

Leaders like the late Ahmadu Bello, an active participant in the recruitment process of mostly disadvantaged Nigerian youths into the military and many model builders believe the major incentive for Nigerian youths and their counterparts elsewhere in West Africa for joining the military was the opportunity it provided to climb the social ladder. Additional incentives for many of the new recruits including the likes of Olusegun Obasanjo, driven by inferiority complex, was the potential acquisition of power and influence, through political intrigue and military tactics, instead of long years of intellectual and bureaucratic preparation which defined power wielders of the period. A young, very calculated Obasanjo therefore “ ‘set out early at dawn’, to scheme for power with great tenacity, without, in the words of Andrew Young, his friend and former United States’ UN permanent representative, “caring not about who […]

Persistent rainfall in Lagos yesterday disrupted commercial activities and slowed movement across the state as traders, commuters and motorists grappled with the effects of the prolonged downpour. The rain, which began around 5:25 a.m. and persisted until about 4:20 p.m., left several roads and walkways flooded. Pedestrians were compelled to seek shelter in available places with covers while motorists navigated waterlogged sections with caution. Business activities in major commercial areas were significantly affected as many traders recorded low patronage, with customers staying away because of the weather. Some street traders struggled to protect their wares from the rain, while others suspended business temporarily as floodwater encroached on their trading spaces. Commuters travelling to work and other destinations also experienced delays, with many stranded at bus stops waiting for the rain to subside before continuing their journeys. However, commercial motorcycle […]
