An Ondo State High Court has sentenced a vulcaniser to death after finding him guilty of murdering a man over allegations of mobile phone theft.
The court held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the conviction of the defendant for the unlawful killing.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred after the victim was accused of stealing a mobile phone. Rather than reporting the matter to law enforcement authorities, the defendant allegedly assaulted the victim, resulting in fatal injuries.
During the trial, the prosecution presented witnesses and evidence linking the defendant to the offence. After reviewing the evidence, the court found the accused guilty and imposed the death sentence in accordance with the provisions of the law.
The presiding judge stated that no individual has the right to take the law into their own hands, stressing that allegations of theft should be handled through lawful channels and not through violence or mob justice.
The judgment has renewed calls for greater public awareness on the dangers of jungle justice and the need to allow security agencies and the courts to handle criminal allegations.
Legal experts say the ruling underscores the importance of due process and serves as a reminder that acts of violence resulting in the loss of life carry serious legal consequences.
The case also highlights the continued efforts of the judiciary to ensure accountability in criminal cases and reinforce respect for the rule of law in Ondo State.

On Friday, Eric Chelle became the inaugural non-Nigerian African coach to take the helm of the Super Eagles. The Malian coach directed his first match, resulting in a 2-0 win against Rwanda during a qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup. Chelle's appointment by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) took place on January 7, as he replaced Finidi George and succeeded interim coach Augustine Eguavoen. Since that time, he has dedicated three months to traveling across Nigeria, observing domestic league matches, and engaging with his players based in Europe. However, his initial team selection remained perplexing. Chelle opted for a highly offensive formation in Kigali, which appeared unbalanced on paper. Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon were all included in the attacking lineup, while Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi occupied the midfield positions. "I had mixed feelings. […]

Senate Passes State Police Bill in Major Security Reform Move
The Nigerian Senate has passed the State Police Bill, marking a significant step toward restructuring the country’s policing system and addressing growing security challenges across the federation. The legislation seeks to establish a legal framework for the creation and operation of state-controlled police services alongside the existing federal police structure. Supporters of the bill argue that state police would improve local intelligence gathering, strengthen community policing, and enhance the response to security threats at the grassroots level. The passage of the bill follows years of debate among lawmakers, security experts, state governments, and civil society groups over the need for decentralized policing. Advocates have consistently maintained that a state police system would enable states to respond more effectively to crimes such as kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, and communal conflicts. During deliberations, lawmakers emphasized the importance of putting in place adequate […]
