A Federal High Court, Abuja has given a suspected Commander of Ansaru, an Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group, Abubakar Abba (a.k.a. Abu Bara) up till July 20 to decide on whether or not to change his earlier not guilty plea.
Abba is being prosecuted along with Mahmud Usman (a.k.a. Isah Adam, Mahmud Al-Nigeri) by the Department of the State Service (DSS) on a 32-count terrorism charge.
Our correspondent in Abuja reported that Usman had, during their arraignment earlier this year, pleaded guilty to a count of illegal mining for funding terrorism/arms and was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.
He pleaded not guilty to the other 31 counts. The co-defendant, Abba pleaded not guilty to all the 32 counts.
At yesterday’s hearing, Abba informed the court of his intention to withdraw his earlier not guilty plea. But after a brief consultation with his lawyer, Husseina Tukur, he told the court that he was still undecided on whether to change his plea or retain the earlier one.
Replying , prosecuting lawyer, David Kaswe opposed any adjournment. He argued that the defendant had made a similar request at the last sitting.
He urged the court to proceed with the trial should the defendant fail to make up his mind on what to do.
Ruling, Justice Emeka Nwite noted that since Abba was raising the issue before the court for the first time, the defendant should be given the opportunity to make up his mind.
Justice Nwite then, adjourned till July 20 for Abba to decide on what to do and for continuation of hearing.
Our correspondent further learnt that the defendants were arrested in separate operations between May and July 2025 by the DSS.
They were charged with many offences including terrorism and terrorism financing, kidnapping for ransom, illegal mining, funding terrorism, fabricating Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), among other charges.
The two defendants were equally accused of coordinating sleeper cells, attacks, and maintaining ties with terrorist groups in the Sahel/Maghreb region.

Rwanda vs Nigeria: Chelle reignites the Super Eagles’ aspirations for the 2026 World Cup in Kigali.
On Friday, Eric Chelle became the inaugural non-Nigerian African coach to take the helm of the Super Eagles. The Malian coach directed his first match, resulting in a 2-0 win against Rwanda during a qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup. Chelle's appointment by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) took place on January 7, as he replaced Finidi George and succeeded interim coach Augustine Eguavoen. Since that time, he has dedicated three months to traveling across Nigeria, observing domestic league matches, and engaging with his players based in Europe. However, his initial team selection remained perplexing. Chelle opted for a highly offensive formation in Kigali, which appeared unbalanced on paper. Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon were all included in the attacking lineup, while Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi occupied the midfield positions. "I had mixed feelings. […]

2027: Storm In Opposition Camp Ahead Consensus-Candidacy
Summit moves by opposition parties to pick a single presidential candidate at their August 31 summit appear to have run into trouble even before the talks take root, Ayemafuge has gathered. Renewed distrust mainly between the camps of the candidate of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and that of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, is said to be fast eroding hope of a united front being championed by proponents of the summit. The summit was originally scheduled for August 18 but was shifted to August 31 following consultations by the six participating political parties and members of the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives. Their spokesman, Salihu Mohammed Lukman, said the adjustment became necessary in view of the National Peace Summit scheduled for August 18, which was meant to bring together the leadership and […]

Outrage over Atiku’s plan to restore fuel subsidy
Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Atiku Abubakar, had promised to reinstate subsidy payment if elected in next year’s presidential election because, according to him, the money made from the removal of fuel subsidy has not been accounted for by the Tinubu administration. President Bola Tinubu, in a response to the allegation, said it smacked of ignorance. But Atiku insisted in a fresh statement yesterday that the federal government got it all wrong on its intervention in the oil sector. The former vice president described his proposal as a “targeted, capped, budgeted, time-bound and independently audited production-support mechanism tied to domestic production and protected against arbitrage.” Experts who bared their minds on the issue in different interviews with our reporters include the Chief Executive Officer, Economic Associates, Dr. Ayo Teriba; Managing Director, Arthur Steven Asset Management, Mr. Olatunde […]
