The Nigerian Senate has passed the State Police Bill, marking a significant step toward restructuring the country’s policing system and addressing growing security challenges across the federation.
The legislation seeks to establish a legal framework for the creation and operation of state-controlled police services alongside the existing federal police structure. Supporters of the bill argue that state police would improve local intelligence gathering, strengthen community policing, and enhance the response to security threats at the grassroots level.

The passage of the bill follows years of debate among lawmakers, security experts, state governments, and civil society groups over the need for decentralized policing. Advocates have consistently maintained that a state police system would enable states to respond more effectively to crimes such as kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, and communal conflicts.
During deliberations, lawmakers emphasized the importance of putting in place adequate safeguards to prevent abuse of the proposed state police structures. Provisions were reportedly included to promote accountability, oversight, and cooperation between federal and state security agencies.

The development has been welcomed by many stakeholders who believe it could strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and improve public safety. However, some observers have expressed concerns about funding, political interference, and the need for clear operational guidelines.
Following its passage by the Senate, the bill is expected to proceed through the remaining legislative and constitutional processes required before it can become law.
If eventually implemented, the state police system could represent one of the most significant reforms to Nigeria’s security framework since the country’s return to democratic governance.
The move comes amid increasing calls for innovative approaches to tackling insecurity and improving law enforcement across the country’s diverse regions.

Chelle's appointment by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) took place on January 7, as he replaced Finidi George and succeeded interim coach Augustine Eguavoen. Since that time, he has dedicated three months to traveling across Nigeria, observing domestic league matches, and engaging with his players based in Europe. However, his initial team selection remained perplexing. Chelle opted for a highly offensive formation in Kigali, which appeared unbalanced on paper. Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon were all included in the attacking lineup, while Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi occupied the midfield positions. "I had mixed feelings. […]
