Psquare, Wizkid were local stars before I elevated their careers – Akon

Senegalese-American artist Akon has asserted that he was instrumental in elevating Nigerian superstars Wizkid, Psquare , and others from being a regional performer to international icons. In a recent episode of the Bagfuel Brigade podcast, Akon revealed that he signed Wizkid to his label in 2008, at a time when he was heavily involved in the Nigerian music industry and contributing to the development of what is now recognized as the global Afrobeats movement. “In 2008, I spent my time in Nigeria developing what you see today as Afrobeats,” Akon stated. “Wizkid was the first Nigerian artist we officially signed.
