Tension in Ondo Community as Reported Clash Erupts in Atijere, Leaders Call for Calm and Urgent Security Intervention

Tension has reportedly gripped Atijere community in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State following an alleged clash involving groups identified as Ijebus and Ilajes, sparking fears of a wider crisis in the coastal settlement.

According to local sources, the disturbance began hours earlier when armed men allegedly entered parts of Atijere, with residents reporting sporadic gunshots that caused panic across the community. Youths in the area were said to have resisted the incursion using sticks and stones, while many families fled to safer locations.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the dispute may be linked to territorial claims extending toward the Aaromi seaside, with some alleging that neighbouring Ogun State is asserting claims over the Atijere axis. Authorities, however, have yet to issue an official statement clarifying the situation.

Community leaders and stakeholders have condemned the reported invasion, describing it as unacceptable in a democratic society and warning that continued violence could destabilise the region if not urgently addressed.

Molokun of Atijere Palace

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Commissioner, Hon. Otito Atikase, has called on the Ondo State Government and security agencies to act swiftly to restore peace and prevent further escalation of the clashes.

Observers are also urging Ondo State Governor, His Exellency Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, to engage his Ogun State counterpart in dialogue aimed at easing tensions and resolving any boundary-related concerns through peaceful and legal means.

Security agencies have been urged to intervene promptly, reinforce safety in the affected areas, and ensure the protection of lives and properties as residents anxiously await calm.

As of press time, the full extent of casualties or damage remains unclear, while authorities are expected to provide updates as the situation develops.

On Friday, Eric Chelle became the inaugural non-Nigerian African coach to take the helm of the Super Eagles. The Malian coach directed his first match, resulting in a 2-0 win against Rwanda during a qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup. Chelle's appointment by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) took place on January 7, as he replaced Finidi George and succeeded interim coach Augustine Eguavoen. Since that time, he has dedicated three months to traveling across Nigeria, observing domestic league matches, and engaging with his players based in Europe. However, his initial team selection remained perplexing. Chelle opted for a highly offensive formation in Kigali, which appeared unbalanced on paper. Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon were all included in the attacking lineup, while Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi occupied the midfield positions. "I had mixed feelings. […]

This reality has long placed Makoko at a delicate intersection between human survival and public risk. Recent demolition activities carried out by the Lagos State Government (LASG) have sparked outrage, protests and deep emotional distress among residents and civil society groups.
