President Bola Tinubu has decorated Olatunji Disu with his new rank as Acting Inspector-General of Police. Ayemafuge found out that the ceremony was held at the State House, Abuja, on Wednesday at about 4.00pm in the President’s office.
The event was attended by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; and the immediate past IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.
Our correspondent at the state house, Abuja was told that Disu’s appointment came 48 days before his scheduled retirement on April 13, 2026, when he would attain the mandatory retirement age of 60.
However, under the amended Police Act, which provides a four-year tenure for Inspectors-General of Police irrespective of age, he may remain in office until 2030. While pinning the new insignia on his uniform, the President commended Egbetokun for his service to the nation.
The ceremony followed Egbetokun’s resignation letter submitted to the President on Tuesday, citing family matters that require his full attention.

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday remanded the Presidential Candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the determination of an application seeking a stay of execution of an earlier court order revoking his bail. No fewer than 265 members of Niger’s Defence and Security Forces (FDS), including senior officers, have reportedly been killed in a series of coordinated attacks across different parts of the country between June 17 and June 19.
