Evacuated Nigerians Return Home Amid Hostilities Against Black Migrants in South Africa

Article arrow_drop_down

A group of evacuated Nigerians has returned home following renewed hostilities targeting black migrants in parts of South Africa, prompting concerns over the safety and welfare of foreign nationals.

The returnees arrived in Nigeria after coordinated evacuation efforts by the Federal Government and relevant agencies to assist citizens affected by the unrest. Authorities said the evacuation was carried out to ensure the safety of Nigerians who faced threats amid the escalating tensions.

Reports indicate that the hostilities disrupted the lives and livelihoods of many migrants, forcing some to abandon their businesses, jobs, and residences. Several affected individuals sought assistance from Nigerian diplomatic missions before arrangements were made for their safe return.

Government officials reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerian citizens abroad, stating that support would be provided to help the returnees reintegrate into society.

The Federal Government also urged Nigerians residing overseas to remain law-abiding, stay in contact with Nigerian diplomatic missions, and promptly report any security concerns through official channels.

The latest evacuation has renewed discussions about the safety of African migrants in South Africa and the need for stronger regional cooperation to address discrimination, violence, and other challenges affecting foreign nationals.

Authorities noted that diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and South Africa would continue as both countries work to strengthen bilateral relations and promote the protection of citizens living and working across the continent.

The government expressed appreciation to all agencies involved in the evacuation exercise and assured Nigerians that efforts would continue to safeguard the welfare of citizens both at home and abroad.

Rwanda vs Nigeria: Chelle reignites the Super Eagles’ aspirations for the 2026 World Cup in Kigali.

On Friday, Eric Chelle became the inaugural non-Nigerian African coach to take the helm of the Super Eagles. The Malian coach directed his first match, resulting in a 2-0 win against Rwanda during a qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup. Chelle's appointment by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) took place on January 7, as he replaced Finidi George and succeeded interim coach Augustine Eguavoen. Since that time, he has dedicated three months to traveling across Nigeria, observing domestic league matches, and engaging with his players based in Europe. However, his initial team selection remained perplexing. Chelle opted for a highly offensive formation in Kigali, which appeared unbalanced on paper. Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon were all included in the attacking lineup, while Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi occupied the midfield positions. "I had mixed feelings. […]
