On Friday, Eric Chelle became the inaugural non-Nigerian African coach to take the helm of the Super Eagles. The Malian coach directed his first match, resulting in a 2-0 win against Rwanda during a qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup. Chelle’s appointment by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) took place on January 7, as he replaced Finidi George and succeeded interim coach Augustine Eguavoen.
Since that time, he has dedicated three months to traveling across Nigeria, observing domestic league matches, and engaging with his players based in Europe.
However, his initial team selection remained perplexing. Chelle opted for a highly offensive formation in Kigali, which appeared unbalanced on paper. Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon were all included in the attacking lineup, while Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi occupied the midfield positions.
“I had mixed feelings. Initially, I was quite surprised by the team selection, especially since Eric Chelle previously managed Mali with a 4-3-1-2 formation,” stated Ope Adebari, a sports analyst, reporter, and producer at News Central.
“Nonetheless, it is widely recognized that many of our top players are wingers, making their inclusion unavoidable.”
I, however, did not concur with the choice of team or the formation, as it had previously been implemented under Jose Peseiro without success.
The 4-3-1-2 formation occasionally transitioned into a 4-2-4 or 4-4-2, depending on the dynamics of the match.
Despite the Eagles’ initial struggle to adapt to Chelle’s new strategies, they successfully outperformed their opponents, taking a two-goal lead in the first half, largely due to the impressive performance of Victor Osimhen.
“This is the best performance I have witnessed from this squad in quite some time,” Adebari acknowledged. “It is evident that the players made a concerted effort to implement the manager’s tactics while ensuring they secured the crucial three points.”
One of Chelle’s responsibilities is to help Nigeria escape the challenging situation they face in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
After four matches and two different coaches, the three-time African champions have managed three draws and one defeat, placing them fifth in Group C.
Adebari stated, “From a mathematical perspective, it is reasonable to conclude that the World Cup qualification process is progressing positively.”
He further noted, “The evident team spirit displayed by the Super Eagles indicates that the players are eager to secure their place in the 2026 World Cup.”
This recent victory has propelled them to fourth place, just ahead of their upcoming home match against Zimbabwe.
Despite the promising early signs, Chelle still faces significant challenges in developing the squad to reflect his vision.
“I am certain he recognized how ineffective the midfield appeared on several occasions prior to Raphael Onyedika’s introduction.”
“Additionally, Samuel Chukwueze struggled to make an impact in the new role assigned to him.”
Adebari concluded, “I trust that Eric Chelle understands the necessity of enhancing our midfield performance if we aim to achieve convincing victories against Zimbabwe and future opponents.”
