Former Catholic Bishops’ Conference President Akubeze dies at 69

The Catholic Archbishop of Benin City and former President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze is dead. Akubeze died on Thursday while on vacation abroad at the age of 69. He would have turned 70 on August 25 which would have also signalled his retirement in line with the Catholic Church’s doctrine. Born on August 25, 1956, Archbishop Akubeze was ordained a Catholic priest before being appointed Bishop of Uromi. A statement by the Chancellor of the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City, Very Rev. Fr. Court gives ‘terrorist group’s boss’ Usman time to decide on not guilty plea

A Federal High Court, Abuja has given a suspected Commander of Ansaru, an Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group, Abubakar Abba (a.k.a. Abu Bara) up till July 20 to decide on whether or not to change his earlier not guilty plea. Abba is being prosecuted along with Mahmud Usman (a.k.a. Isah Adam, Mahmud Al-Nigeri) by the Department of the State Service (DSS) on a 32-count terrorism charge. Our correspondent in Abuja reported that Usman had, during their arraignment earlier this year, pleaded guilty to a count of illegal mining for funding terrorism/arms and was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. Violence erupts in Ibadan over killing of tricycle mechanic by scrap collectors

Violence erupted in the Ojoo area of Ibadan on Wednesday after a Yoruba tricycle mechanic was allegedly stabbed to death by a Hausa scrap collector. Police kill two suspected kidnappers Recover weapons in Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command said its operatives have neutralised two suspected kidnappers during a gun duel at Ilu Abo in Akure North Local Government Area of the state. FG reduces used vehicle import levy to 5%, New vehicles to 10%

Tragedy: Former deputy governor loses two children in accident

The immediate past Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Baba Tela, has lost two of his children, Mustapha and Ummi, in a fatal road accident.
