A Nigerian air force operation targeting jihadist rebels struck a market in north-east Nigeria, resulting in the deaths of more than 100 people and injuring many others, as reported by Amnesty International and local media. Officials confirmed that a misfire had occurred but did not provide additional details.
Amnesty International indicated that it confirmed from survivors that at least 100 individuals were killed in the airstrike on a village in Yobe state, near the border with Borno state, which is the center of the jihadist insurgency that has affected the region for over a decade.
The Nigerian military frequently conducts airstrikes to combat armed groups that utilize extensive forest areas, and according to an Associated Press count, at least 500 civilians have died since 2017.
Security analysts have pointed to weaknesses in intelligence gathering and insufficient coordination between ground forces, air units, and other stakeholders.
The Yobe state government confirmed in a statement that a Nigerian military strike targeted a Boko Haram stronghold in the area, noting that “some individuals… who went to the Jilli weekly market were impacted.”
Isa Sanusi, Amnesty International’s Nigeria director, stated: “We are in contact with individuals on the ground; we have spoken with the hospital, the person responsible for casualties, and the victims.” The Nigerian air force has not yet responded to requests for information.

On Friday, Eric Chelle became the inaugural non-Nigerian African coach to take the helm of the Super Eagles. The Malian coach directed his first match, resulting in a 2-0 win against Rwanda during a qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup. Chelle's appointment by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) took place on January 7, as he replaced Finidi George and succeeded interim coach Augustine Eguavoen. Since that time, he has dedicated three months to traveling across Nigeria, observing domestic league matches, and engaging with his players based in Europe. However, his initial team selection remained perplexing. Chelle opted for a highly offensive formation in Kigali, which appeared unbalanced on paper. Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon were all included in the attacking lineup, while Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi occupied the midfield positions. "I had mixed feelings. […]
