The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu has cautioned officers against complacency following the rescue of abducted students and teachers in Oyo State, saying the operation should sharpen the force’s resolve.
Our correspondent attached to the force headquarters in Abuja reported that Disu spoke while addressing senior officers at Force Headquarters, Abuja, during the NPF’s monthly strategic conference, yesterday. He said the rescue demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and inter-agency collaboration, crediting its success to cooperation between the police, the armed forces, other agencies and members of the public who supplied information.
The IGP urged Nigerians to keep reporting suspicious activity, saying the country’s security environment was complex, with criminal groups constantly adapting.
He called for improved intelligence gathering, surveillance and inter-agency collaboration. He directed Commissioners of Police to design strategies suited to their states rather than rely on routine policing, stressing that success should be measured by security outcomes not the number of operations conducted. Disu also ordered that every operation be reviewed afterward to capture lessons learnt.
Giving an account of police operations since the last conference on June 9, the IGP said 1,198 suspects were arrested nationwide, comprising 151 for murder and culpable homicide, 117 for armed robbery, 151 for kidnapping, 104 suspected cultists and 169 for illegal firearm possession.
He said 166 kidnap victims were rescued, and police recovered 166 firearms, 1,475 rounds of ammunition and 47 stolen vehicles during the period.

Reps seek nationwide audit of seized, forfeited assets since 1999
The House of Representatives yesterday called for a comprehensive audit and verification of all seized, forfeited, recovered, managed, disposed of and repatriated assets held by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), anti-corruption agencies, security agencies and courts from May 29, 1999 to date. The House resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Ibe Okwara Osonwa, representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency of Abia State, on the need for a comprehensive audit, digital registry and strengthened accountability framework for seized, forfeited and recovered assets in Nigeria.
