2027: Storm In Opposition Camp Ahead Consensus-Candidacy

Article arrow_drop_down

Summit moves by opposition parties to pick a single presidential candidate at their August 31 summit appear to have run into trouble even before the talks take root, Ayemafuge has gathered.

Renewed distrust mainly between the camps of the candidate of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and that of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, is said to be fast eroding hope of a united front being championed by proponents of the summit.

The summit was originally scheduled for August 18 but was shifted to August 31 following consultations by the six participating political parties and members of the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives.

Their spokesman, Salihu Mohammed Lukman, said the adjustment became necessary in view of the National Peace Summit scheduled for August 18, which was meant to bring together the leadership and key stakeholders of the political parties participating in the G100 consultations.

“Following discussions with the parties and the Minority Caucus, there was a broad consensus that the G100 Summit would benefit from being held after the National Peace Summit, allowing sufficient time for further internal consultations and preparation,” Lukman said.

However, some supporters of Atiku and Obi appear not convinced by the proposed single candidate talks. For them, it is their candidate or noting

The verbal hostility, particularly on X, has exposed the deep fault lines that could complicate efforts to persuade the two presidential hopefuls to accept a compromise.

At the centre of the latest controversy is the claim by Atiku supporters that Obi has been sending emissaries to the former VP to step down for him.

The former vice president’s supporters claimed that the alleged overture is a pointer to the apprehension in Obi’s camp about Atiku’s strength.

An Atiku supporter, Uche Rochas, an architect, said on his X handle @U Rochas that Obi should just “get out of the way and fold his campaign.”

He said: “They are calling on Atiku to step down and support Obi so that Obi can win. Now, we are calling on Obi to get out of the way and fold his campaign. We don’t need his support; we simply want him to stop distracting Nigerians.

“He can publicly support BAT, we don’t give a f..k about that. He should either step down or step away.”

He branded Obi’s press conference to flag off his campaign useless.

Rwanda vs Nigeria: Chelle reignites the Super Eagles’ aspirations for the 2026 World Cup in Kigali.

On Friday, Eric Chelle became the inaugural non-Nigerian African coach to take the helm of the Super Eagles. The Malian coach directed his first match, resulting in a 2-0 win against Rwanda during a qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup. Chelle's appointment by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) took place on January 7, as he replaced Finidi George and succeeded interim coach Augustine Eguavoen. Since that time, he has dedicated three months to traveling across Nigeria, observing domestic league matches, and engaging with his players based in Europe. However, his initial team selection remained perplexing. Chelle opted for a highly offensive formation in Kigali, which appeared unbalanced on paper. Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon were all included in the attacking lineup, while Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi occupied the midfield positions. "I had mixed feelings. […]

Outrage over Atiku’s plan to restore fuel subsidy

Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Atiku Abubakar, had promised to reinstate subsidy payment if elected in next year’s presidential election because, according to him, the money made from the removal of fuel subsidy has not been accounted for by the Tinubu administration. President Bola Tinubu, in a response to the allegation, said it smacked of ignorance. But Atiku insisted in a fresh statement yesterday that the federal government got it all wrong on its intervention in the oil sector. The former vice president described his proposal as a “targeted, capped, budgeted, time-bound and independently audited production-support mechanism tied to domestic production and protected against arbitrage.” Experts who bared their minds on the issue in different interviews with our reporters include the Chief Executive Officer, Economic Associates, Dr. Ayo Teriba; Managing Director, Arthur Steven Asset Management, Mr. Olatunde […]
