Demands urgent rescue of Oyo pupils, teachers
Femi Falana, SAN, human rights lawyer, has called for the immediate rescue of schoolchidren and teachers abducted in Oyo State. He warned that the victims are enduring severe hardship in captivity.
Falana made the appeal on Friday during a June 12 protest held under the Ikeja Bridge in Lagos. The demonstrators gathered to decry insecurity, economic hardship and what they described as a declining democratic culture in the country.
The protest was later marked by tension after supporters and counter-protesters converged on the same venue, forcing police intervention to prevent a breakdown of law and order during Democracy Day commemorations.
Falana stated that the protest was not only about the abducted school pupils, also about wider concerns affecting Nigerians, including rising poverty and alleged injustice by security agencies. He noted that the continued kidnapping of schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno states reflects a deepening security crisis that must be urgently addressed.
“Those kids are suffering. No medical attention, no food for them,” he said.
Falana added that Nigerians were, in a broader sense, also “in custody” due to worsening national conditions. He demanded immediate action from the authorities to secure the release of the victims and their teachers. Falana also said that one of the abducted teachers had been killed, describing the act as a violent attempt to pressure the government into hastening rescue efforts.
“As you are well aware, a teacher has been beheaded in order to convince the government to move speedily to have those children released by quickly paying the ransom,” he said.
The protest was part of a nationwide mobilisation by a coalition of civil society organisations, trade unions, youth groups, faith-based organisations and other social movements, which had declared June 12 a day of mass action over insecurity and worsening economic hardship.
The coalition, which includes Mr Falana, activist Hassan Taiwo, labour leaders and other civic actors, said the demonstration was meant to press the government to urgently confront insecurity, rising poverty and what it described as policies worsening hardship across the country.
The human rights activist condemned what he described as injustice against Nigerians, including arbitrary arrests along highways, and criticised the level of poverty in the country despite its abundant resources. Falana noted that Nigeria’s democratic journey remained incomplete, arguing that what exists is not full democracy but civilian rule.

Tragedy: Former deputy governor loses two children in accident
The immediate past Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Baba Tela, has lost two of his children, Mustapha and Ummi, in a fatal road accident. Court remands Sowore in Kuje Prison, dismisses recusal request
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday remanded the Presidential Candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the determination of an application seeking a stay of execution of an earlier court order revoking his bail. Heavy military casualties in Niger Republic as attacks claim 265 security personnel
No fewer than 265 members of Niger’s Defence and Security Forces (FDS), including senior officers, have reportedly been killed in a series of coordinated attacks across different parts of the country between June 17 and June 19. The Federal Government has spoken in loud and unambiguous terms to South Africa. It told South Africa’s International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Ronald Lamola, in Abuja yesterday that 98 Nigerians have been killed in the past four years and therefore must stop. FG to spend N962.83bn on SUVs and empowerment amid rising debt burden
The Federal Government is to spend N962.83 billion on procurement of Sport Utility Vehicles and empowerment projects as contained in the 2026 Appropriation Act, according to a review of the budget by civic technology organisation, Tracka. The amount exceeded the combined allocations to seven federal ministries of Industry, Trade and Investment; Housing and Urban Development; Women Affairs; Justice; Livestock Development; Aviation and Aerospace Development; and Petroleum Resources in the 2026 budget. Tracka said in its analysis of the 2026 Federal Government budget, the allocation comprised N15.13 billion for the procurement of 39 SUVs and N947.70 billion for 2,579 empowerment projects, bringing the total to N962.83 billion. The House of Representatives yesterday called for a comprehensive audit and verification of all seized, forfeited, recovered, managed, disposed of and repatriated assets held by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), anti-corruption agencies, security agencies and courts from May 29, 1999 to date.
