Baba Akande, who killed Chief Bola Ige?

Article arrow_drop_down
The assassination of Bola Ige on December 23, 2001, remains one of the most painful and unresolved political murders in Nigeria’s democratic history. More than two decades after the shocking event, the question continues to echo across Nigeria’s political landscape: who killed Bola Ige? The mystery has resurfaced repeatedly in national discourse, particularly after remarks attributed to Bisi Akande suggesting that the late Lam Adesina, who was the Governor of Oyo State when the assassination occurred, had privately told him who was responsible for the killing. Yet the identity of the killers has never been publicly revealed, leaving the assassination of one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures unresolved.
To understand the magnitude of the crime, one must first understand the stature of the man who was killed. Bola Ige was not merely a politician of the Fourth Republic; he was a product of the ideological tradition established by Obafemi Awolowo.

His political formation began in the era of the Action Group during the First Republic, where he emerged as one of the most vibrant intellectual figures in the party. Within the Action Group, he was widely known as one of the famous “Young Turks,” the energetic and intellectually driven younger generation that formed the backbone of the party’s ideological and propaganda machinery. Although he held several responsibilities in the party, his most prominent position was that of Federal Publicity Secretary, making him the principal spokesman of the Action Group. In that role, he defended and promoted the party’s ideology of democratic socialism while articulating the policies of Awolowo’s government in the Western Region.

His eloquence, sharp legal mind, and commanding oratory made him a formidable opponent of the dominant parties of the period, including the Northern People’s Congress and the National Council of Nigerian Citizens. Beyond propaganda, Ige was also deeply involved in shaping the ideological direction of the Action Group. He contributed to refining the party’s welfare policies, particularly the revolutionary programmes of free education and free healthcare, which became the hallmark of the Awolowo administration in the Western Region.
His loyalty to Awolowo was absolute. When the famous crisis erupted within the Action Group in 1962 between Awolowo and Samuel Ladoke Akintola, Bola Ige firmly sided with Awolowo. The crisis eventually led to the declaration of a state of emergency in the Western Region and the fragmentation of the party. During the turbulent political trials that followed, including the treasonable felony charges brought against Awolowo and his associates, Bola Ige also became involved in the legal battles defending members of the Action Group. These experiences became what many observers later described as his political baptism, shaping his ideological commitment and preparing him for greater political responsibilities in later years.

When Nigeria returned to civilian rule in the late 1970s, the ideological blueprint of the Action Group became the foundation for the formation of the Unity Party of Nigeria. Bola Ige was among the prominent leaders who carried forward the Awoist philosophy into the new political era. In the 1979 governorship election in Oyo State, he contested under the banner of the Unity Party of Nigeria and defeated Richard Akinjide of the National Party of Nigeria to become the first executive governor of the old Oyo State, which at the time included the territory that later became Osun State. Other candidates in that election included Areoye Oyebola of the Nigerian People’s Party, Busari Adelakun of the Great Nigeria People’s Party, and Lere Adigun of the People’s Redemption Party. Ironically, Richard Akinjide later became Attorney-General of the Federation and gained national prominence for his controversial interpretation of the “twelve two-thirds” constitutional formula that helped Shehu Shagari secure the presidency that same year.
Bola Ige governed Oyo State from 1979 until 1983.

In the controversial 1983 election, he lost his re-election bid to Victor Omololu Olunloyo of the National Party of Nigeria, an outcome that many critics described as deeply disputed. After the collapse of the Second Republic and the return of military rule, Bola Ige once again emerged as a prominent voice in the struggle for democracy. He became an influential member of the National Democratic Coalition, which fought against military dictatorship following the annulment of the June 12 election.
When the military regime led by Abdulsalami Abubakar initiated the transition to civilian rule in 1999, Bola Ige became a central intellectual figure in the rebirth of democratic politics. While he sought the presidential ticket of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), he did not contest the 1999 governorship of Oyo State.
nstead, he served as a kingmaker and ideological leader for the AD, which saw Lam Adesina emerge as the governorship candidate and ultimate winner against the PDP’s Yekini Adeojo. Figures like Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu remained influential power brokers within the rival PDP structure during this period. Despite the partisan divides, Bola Ige later joined the federal government of Olusegun Obasanjo, serving first as Minister of Power and Steel and eventually as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice.

The final days of Bola Ige’s life were surrounded by intense political tension. On December 15, 2001, he attended a ceremony at the palace of the Ooni of Ife, Okunade Sijuwade, where the First Lady, Stella Obasanjo, was to receive a chieftaincy title. At the entrance of the palace in Ile-Ife, a mob reportedly surrounded the Attorney-General and humiliated him by forcefully removing his cap and breaking his eyeglasses. In Yoruba culture, removing an elder’s cap in public is considered a grave insult and a symbolic death wish. According to testimonies that later surfaced during investigations, Olugbenga Adebayo, popularly known as Fryo, alleged that Kola Omisore, the brother of Iyiola Omisore, was the person who physically removed the cap during the attack. At the time, Omisore was locked in a fierce political conflict with Bisi Akande, and Bola Ige had openly supported Akande in that dispute.

Only eight days later, on the night of December 23, 2001, gunmen invaded Bola Ige’s residence in Ibadan and shot him dead in his bedroom. One of the most troubling aspects of the assassination was the allegation that police officers assigned to protect the Attorney-General had been temporarily withdrawn before the killers arrived. For many observers, this raised the possibility that the murder might have involved powerful political interests or even elements within the state.

Several suspects were arrested and tried in connection with the assassination, including Iyiola Omisore. However, after years of legal proceedings, the accused were eventually acquitted because the prosecution failed to establish sufficient evidence. The collapse of the case only deepened public suspicion that the truth about the murder had been deliberately buried.

More than two decades later, the question remains unanswered. The comments attributed to Bisi Akande suggesting that Lam Adesina knew the identity of the killers have revived a national debate that refuses to disappear. If indeed those who knew the truth are no longer alive, then the assassination of Bola Ige may remain one of the most enduring mysteries in Nigeria’s political history. Yet the question continues to haunt the nation: who killed Bola Ige? Until the truth is revealed, the death of the man once celebrated as the Cicero of Agodi will remain both a tragedy and a powerful reminder of the unresolved contradictions within Nigeria’s political system.

Rwanda vs Nigeria: Chelle reignites the Super Eagles’ aspirations for the 2026 World Cup in Kigali.

On Friday, Eric Chelle became the inaugural non-Nigerian African coach to take the helm of the Super Eagles. The Malian coach directed his first match, resulting in a 2-0 win against Rwanda during a qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup. Chelle's appointment by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) took place on January 7, as he replaced Finidi George and succeeded interim coach Augustine Eguavoen. Since that time, he has dedicated three months to traveling across Nigeria, observing domestic league matches, and engaging with his players based in Europe. However, his initial team selection remained perplexing. Chelle opted for a highly offensive formation in Kigali, which appeared unbalanced on paper. Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon were all included in the attacking lineup, while Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi occupied the midfield positions. "I had mixed feelings. […]

Three brothers. One promised to serve. One became president. One walked among the broken. All three were killed before their work was finished. Their legacy refuses to die. With quiet reverence, we remember John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Joseph P. Kennedy Jr.—three brothers bound not only by blood, but by an uncommon sense of duty to something greater than themselves.Their lives were marked by triumph and tragedy, by hope and violence. Yet what defines them isn't how they died, but how bravely and compassionately they lived—and how much they sacrificed believing America could be better than it was.Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. was the eldest—handsome, brilliant, charismatic. The one their father groomed for greatness, the one expected to become president someday. He carried ambition not as ego but as responsibility.
