INEC Declares Oyebanji Winner of 2026 Ekiti Governorship Election

Article arrow_drop_down

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), winner of the 2026 governorship election in the state, securing a second term in office.

Oyebanji emerged victorious after polling the highest number of valid votes cast across the state’s 16 local government areas. The election, which was held on June 20, witnessed participation from candidates representing several political parties.

INEC officials announced the result following the conclusion of collation exercises at the state level. The commission stated that the election was conducted across thousands of polling units and wards in Ekiti State in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act and established electoral guidelines.

The victory marks a significant milestone for Oyebanji, who first assumed office as governor in October 2022. His re-election is expected to provide continuity for ongoing infrastructure, economic development, education, healthcare, and social investment programmes initiated during his first term.

Political stakeholders, party supporters, and residents across the state have continued to react to the outcome, with many describing the election as a key test of the governor’s popularity and the performance of his administration over the last four years.

Observers noted that the election was closely monitored by security agencies, civil society organizations, and electoral observers to ensure compliance with democratic standards. INEC had earlier assured voters of a transparent and credible process while warning against electoral offences such as vote buying and voter intimidation.

With the declaration, attention is expected to shift toward the governor’s plans for his second term and the implementation of policies aimed at accelerating development across Ekiti State.

The 2026 governorship election was one of Nigeria’s major off-cycle elections and attracted significant political interest from across the country.

However, his initial team selection remained perplexing. Chelle opted for a highly offensive formation in Kigali, which appeared unbalanced on paper. Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon were all included in the attacking lineup, while Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi occupied the midfield positions.
