The UN predicts cities to be homes for approximately 60–70% of the global population by 2050 suggesting the need for sustainable design and planning. Can we do something to enhance the quality of the coastal environments and by extension, the communities? The objectives are to evaluate the local construction methods based on cultural knowledge and indigenous expertise, determine sustainable local building materials that reflect the people’s culture and place, and assess the level of inclusion of the community members in Ilaje Bariga, Lagos, and Ilaje Ese-Odo, Ondo State waterfront communities. Phenomenological, qualitative, and desk-based methods were adopted to elicit relevant data.

The results showed that the belief system and cultural rites in the use of local techniques, choice of joinery for the stilt structures, and the use of locally skilled artisans for fabrication processes were essential to enhancing community resilience. The study recommends designed layouts plans, a short pile structural system to enhance support of stilt structures, and the use of in-loco building materials that promotes local values and enhances the practicability of SDGs.
