The UN predicts cities to be homes for approximately 60–70% of the global population by 2050 suggesting the need for sustainable design and planning. Can we do something to enhance the quality of the coastal environments and by extension, the communities? This study investigates indigenous knowledge for the design of sustainable stilt structures for resilient communities.

The objectives are to evaluate the local construction methods based on cultural knowledge and indigenous expertise, determine sustainable local building materials that reflect the people’s culture and place, and assess the level of inclusion of the community members in Ilaje Bariga, Lagos, and Ilaje Ese-Odo, Ondo State waterfront communities.
